Please join us for the annual BCLA ALPS December Meeting

Please join us for the annual BCLA ALPS December meeting at the beautiful Langara College Library, on Friday, December 14th from 9.00am to 3.00pm!

This year’s theme touches on two of the hottest topics in academic librarianship: service reviews and assessment.

We’ll kick off the morning with an exciting panel discussion on library service reviews and their impact. Featured panelists include: library managers, librarians and support staff from three academic institutions: SFU, UBC-O and UBC-V. Our panelists are: Janis McKenzie (SFU), Scott Mackenzie (SFU), Sarah Stang (UBC-O), Sierra Stephens (UBC-O), Gordon Yusko (UBC-V) and Julie Mitchell (UBC-V). The highlight of the afternoon session is a not-to-be-missed presentation on first year instruction assessment by Erin Fields (UBC-V).

1) Library Service Reviews: Trends, Implementation and Next Steps

In response to the ongoing and rapid evolution of academic libraries, SFU, UBC-O and UBC-V have recently undertaken formal reviews of library services such as: the liaison librarian model, reference, circulation, and technical services. Each of these institutions is at a different stage of the review and implementation process which comprises renovations, consolidated service points, staff reallocation and more. This panel brings together speakers in diverse roles across the library who are at the forefront of these initiatives to share their experiences, challenges, solutions and strategies for the future. Whether your library is planning, implementing or assessing a review of library services, this panel discussion is an opportunity to gain and share valuable insight into this transformational trend.

Speakers:

Simon Fraser University Library: Janis McKenzie is Head of Information and Instruction (formerly Reference) . Scott Mackenzie is the Head of Access Services at the Bennett Library.

University of British Columbia, Okanagan: Sarah Stang is a Learning Services Librarian and Chair of the Core Competencies Task Group. Sierra Stephens is a Library Assistant and Member of the Core Competencies Task Group.

University of British Columbia, Vancouver: Gordon Yusko is the Assistant Director of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC). Julie Mitchell is Managing Librarian at Chapman Learning Commons in the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC).

2) First-Year Integrated Instruction Assessment – The UBC Library Experience

The UBC Library Strategic Plan 2010-2012 identified enhancing student learning by “deliver(ing) a responsive, integrated program of services and create(ing) exceptional learning and research environments” as a core goal. As of fall 2010, UBC Library reported a First-Year Integrated (FYI) instruction program that reaches over 12,000 students each academic year. While this work demonstrates the success of librarians in meeting the mission of connecting with our communities, knowledge of instructional practices, valid assessment techniques, and the expectations and experiences of research support for first-year students remains unclear.

This presentation will outline the core goals, project development, and implementation of the FYI assessment project. Additionally, this presentation will highlight key findings as they relate to assessment practice and implementation in academic libraries.

Speaker:

Erin Fields is the interim Teaching and Learning Librarian at UBC Library.
